Baccarat Third Card Rule Essential Guide to Avoid Costly Confusion

Understanding baccarat card values makes the drawing procedure much easier. Aces count as 1, cards from 2 through 9 keep their face value, and 10s, jacks, queens and kings count as 0. If a hand totals more than 9, only the final digit is used.

For example, 7 plus 6 equals 13, so the baccarat total is 3. A king and 8 total 8 because the king contributes zero. These values mean a hand can never finish above 9.

The baccarat third card rule first checks whether either initial two-card hand totals 8 or 9. That is called a natural. If at least one hand has a natural, both hands stand and no additional card is drawn.

If Player has 4 and 5 for 9 while Banker has 3 and 3 for 6, the round stops immediately. There is no player third card and no Banker draw. The natural takes priority over the normal drawing table.

If there is no natural, the Player hand follows a simple part of the baccarat draw rules. A total from 0 through 5 draws one more card, while totals of 6 or 7 stand. The dealer or game system applies this automatically.

Suppose the Player starts with 2 and 3 for 5. A player third card must be dealt. If the starting total is 6, Player stands instead. This decision does not depend on whether you wagered on Player, Banker or Tie.

If Player stands on 6 or 7 and there is no natural, the Banker decision is straightforward. Under standard baccarat draw rules, Banker draws with a total of 0 through 5 and stands with 6 or 7.

This is the easier Banker situation because there is no player third card to consider. If Player stands on 6 and Banker has 4, Banker draws. If Banker already has 7, Banker stands.

The more detailed part of the baccarat third card rule begins when Player has drawn an additional card. Banker then uses both its own total and the value of that new Player card to determine whether it draws or stands.

A banker third card is always drawn when Banker’s total is 0, 1 or 2. With totals of 3 through 6, the action depends on the Player’s new card. Banker stands on 7.

If Banker has 3 after the first two cards and Player has drawn, Banker normally takes another card. The exception is when the player third card has a value of 8. In that case, Banker stands.

For instance, Player begins with 2 plus 2 for 4 and receives an 8. If Banker totals 3, no banker third card is dealt. If Player instead receives a 7, Banker draws.

With a Banker total of 4, Banker draws only when the Player’s new card has a value from 2 through 7. If the new card is 0, 1, 8 or 9, Banker stands.

Remember that a 10, jack, queen or king counts as 0 under standard baccarat card values. A face card therefore falls outside the 2-to-7 draw range even though it may look visually high.

When Banker’s total is 5, the draw range becomes narrower. Banker draws if the Player’s new card is 4, 5, 6 or 7. If the new card is 0, 1, 2, 3, 8 or 9, Banker stands.

This part of the baccarat third card rule shows why Banker’s starting total is not always enough. Once Player draws, the value of that extra card can change the Banker action.

With a Banker total of 6, a banker third card is dealt only if the Player’s new card is 6 or 7. Against every other value, Banker stands. Banker also always stands on 7.

Suppose Player receives 2 and 3 for 5. Banker receives 2 and 2 for 4. There is no natural, so the baccarat draw rules require Player to draw. The player third card is a 6, giving Player a final total of 1 because 5 plus 6 equals 11.

Banker started on 4. Because the Player’s new card is 6, it falls inside Banker’s 2-to-7 drawing range for a total of 4. A banker third card is therefore dealt. If Banker receives a 5, the final Banker total becomes 9 and Banker wins the round.

One of the biggest beginner misunderstandings is treating baccarat like blackjack. In blackjack, the player can often choose whether to hit, stand, double or split. In standard baccarat, the baccarat third card rule controls the draw automatically.

This checklist keeps the drawing sequence in the correct order. Check for a natural first, resolve the Player hand second, and then apply the Banker table if another card is needed.
